Soviet Independence, Acrylic on canvas 56 x 53 1991
“You have to be careful who you fight because often times you take on their traits.”–G
In this painting, Giovanni has not yet developed his impasto technique. He places the gold star of the Soviet Union at the center of the canvas, large enough that the corners of the star almost break through the edges of the canvas. The horizontal brush strokes in multi colors cover the piece. The words indicate the intent of the work: it is a celebration of Soviet Independence. Giovanni was commissioned by the White House to do a series on this topic when the Soviet Union was breaking up. The lightness of the style and harmonizing colors speak to a particular joy.
